Orgiva is large village of around 5000 including many foreigners, a majority of whom are alternative types, leading to a higher level of interest in spiritual matters and alternative philosophies than normal. There is a local Sufi community and Buddhist Centre – the Subud group fits right into this hotpotch.
In the past Subud has been central in organising a Sacred Music festival with the Sufis, played the major part in a campaign for an alternative town bypass and was a major contributor to setting up an organic olive mill.
Currently the main use of the centre by the local community is for choir rehearsals and small concerts, and several group members are also involved in these choirs. The local Christmas pantomine and dance workshops use the halls regularly and the halls have also been let for different workshops such as The Journey.
